Executive Summary
Survey of American
Families: Comparison of Households With Insured
Children vs. Uninsured Children Eligible for SCHIP/Medicaid
Coverage
Wirthlin Worldwide conducted a national survey among parents
with children ages 18 years and younger from June 5-26, 2001. We
interviewed 1,662 parents whose children are either 1) covered by
a private health insurance plan, 2) covered by Medicaid or the
State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), or 3) not
covered by any health insurance plan, but are likely eligible for
coverage through the Medicaid or SCHIP programs.
We addressed three objectives with this research:
1. Measure the impact of being uninsured on children's health
and quality of life;
2. Assess the stress experienced by parents when their children
do not have health insurance coverage; and
3. Track awareness and attitudes toward Medicaid and SCHIP
among those parents whose children are eligible for but not
covered by these programs.
