ShareS. 1011: Recognizing Addiction as a Disease Act of 2007

The United States Senate Bill, S. 1101, seeks to change the names of the following government agencies. The proposed changes are:

  • National Institute on Drug Abuse to the National Institute on Diseases of Addiction

  • National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism to the National Institute on Alcohol Disorders and Health

The legislation was introduced by Senator Joseph Biden. The goal of the legislation is to remove the term "abuse" from the agencies' names in order to allow them to focus on addictive disease, and the effects of addiction on general health. The legislation is also intended to help reduce stigma associated with substance abuse treatment.
