ACLU of Texas Lawsuit Against the Texas Youth Commission
On June 12, 2008, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Texas
filed a class action lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the Western
District of Texas against the Texas Youth Commission on behalf of five
girls at the Brownwood State School high security youth prison. In the
lawsuit, the ACLU charges that the treatment of the girls at Brownwood
violates their constitutional rights under the Fourth, Fifth, Eighth, and
Fourteenth Amendments and violates international standards on protecting
children from abuse and cruel treatment.
