Implementation of CANS in Indiana: Frequently Asked Questions
The Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths
(CANS) assessment refers to a group of management tools developed
by John Lyons, PhD, Northwestern University, Chicago and stakeholders
across many states. In 2004,
the Indiana Child Welfare Mental Health Early Identification and
Intervention group sought an assessment tool to implement "practice-based evidence"
in assessments. After reviewing several tools in depth, the group
decided that the CANS was the best choice.
There are several versions of
the CANS, but the CANS tools for Indiana focus
primarily on the child and family. All CAN users
must be recertified annually and individuals will be
given a 30-day grace period after the certification expires. Several
basic reports will be available with the first release
of CANS such as CANS assessment, report for individual child and family
indication changes in outcomes or key indicators over
time, and reports for agencies profiling needs of children served.
