Definity Consumer-Driven Health (CDH) Impact Study
Definity Health has a large consumer-driven health plan (CDHP)
membership. It serves 1.7 million people in CDHPs and
administers about 200,000 health savings accounts.
Between 2003 and 2005, cost and health care utilization among 40,000
CDHP members and 15,000 individuals in preferred
provider organizations (PPO) were under evaluation. The individuals
were part of a closed group comprising four employers.
The statistical analysis made adjustments to control for
variables such as selection demographics, health status,
outliers, benefit plan, and geographic mix.
Slightly more CDHP members used preventative services than PPO
members. CDHP members reduced their hospitalizations by 22% and
emergency room visits by 14%. PPO members did not reduce the their
hospitalization or emergency room use.
Chronically ill individuals in a CDHP reduced hospital admissions by
18% and emergency room visits by 14% compared to those
in a PPO; CDHP member office visit frequency remained comparable
to the PPO plan.
