OIG Semiannual Report to Congress: October 1, 2006 to March 31, 2007
On June 8, 2007, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS),
Office of the Inspector General (OIG) reported $2.9 billion in
expected recoveries between October 1, 2006, and March 31, 2007. The
expected recoveries include $1.5 billion in audit receivables and
$1.4 billion in investigative receivables for fraud or abuse
involving federal health care programs and/or their beneficiaries.
During this period, 209 criminal actions were taken against
individuals or organizations that engaged in crimes involving HHS
programs; and 123 civil actions were taken.. The report includes
the results of audits mandated by the Medicare Prescription Drug,
Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003 as well as Medicaid
integrity efforts pursuant to the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005.
