Georgia Mental Health Service Delivery Commission Progress Report
On June 2, 2008, the Georgia Mental Health Service Delivery Commission
released its initial findings and recommendations to strengthen
community-based services and improve treatment and care in state
hospitals. Key recommendations include creation of a behavioral health
collaborative to develop a behavioral health strategic plan and
standardizing medication access and case management functions.
The Commission also recommended legislative and regulatory changes to
enable probation changes, amend housing restrictions for felons and sex
offenders, amend licensing statutes so that felons can receive licenses
for professions, amend the civil commitment statute to permit outpatient
services. In addition, the Commission recommended an impact study to
determine how the Georgia Department of Correction and county jails and
inmates have been affected by statutes that may have limited inmates
access to community-based mental health treatment upon release from
incarceration.
