Children With Developmental Disabilities

Blagojevich signed legislation requiring all state, local, and
private insurance plans to pay for treatment of pervasive
developmental disorders and requiring group health benefit plans to
cover an additional 20 outpatient visits for speech therapy. The law
became effective immediately. As insurance plans are renewed next
year, the extra coverage will be included in policies.
House Bill 4125, sponsored by Representative Mary Flowers and
Senator Susan Garrett, amends the State Employees Group Insurance
Act of 1971, the Counties Code, the Illinois Municipal Code, the
School Code, the Illinois Insurance Code, the Health Maintenance
Organization Act, the Voluntary Health Services Plans Act, and the
Illinois Public Aid Code to require coverage for the treatment of
pervasive developmental disorders. the law also amends the Illinois
Insurance Code to provide certain mental health coverage to health
maintenance organizations and individual policies of accident and
health insurance.
