ShareIllinois Law Expands Insurance Coverage for Children With Developmental Disabilities

On June 23, 2006, Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich signed legislation requiring all state, local, and private insurance plans to pay for treatment of pervasive developmental disorders and requiring group health benefit plans to cover an additional 20 outpatient visits for speech therapy. The law became effective immediately. As insurance plans are renewed next year, the extra coverage will be included in policies.

House Bill 4125, sponsored by Representative Mary Flowers and Senator Susan Garrett, amends the State Employees Group Insurance Act of 1971, the Counties Code, the Illinois Municipal Code, the School Code, the Illinois Insurance Code, the Health Maintenance Organization Act, the Voluntary Health Services Plans Act, and the Illinois Public Aid Code to require coverage for the treatment of pervasive developmental disorders. the law also amends the Illinois Insurance Code to provide certain mental health coverage to health maintenance organizations and individual policies of accident and health insurance.
