Trends in Emergency Department Use Involving Nonmedical Use of Narcotic Pain Relievers
The federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration reported that emergency department visits related to non-medical use of prescription
pain relief medications doubled from 2004 to 2008. The researchers used data from the Drug and Alcohol Warning Network. The report was part of a series of
studies on emergency room utilization related to drug-related suicide attempts by adolescents, young adults, and adults 25 and older.
