Project HealthDesign: Rethinking the Power &
Potential of Personal Health Records
Project HealthDesign was created by the Robert
Wood Johnson Foundation to explore the potential of personal health
records (PHRs) to help people make sense of their daily health and take
informed actions. Nine grantee teams received funding to create prototype
user-centered computer, PDA, or cell phone applications that addressed
specific self-management tasks to promote better health and wellness. A
key insight of the 18-month project was the importance of cues people
notice as they monitor their health. Frequently, people using the PHRs
relied on information taken from observations of daily living (ODLs),
such as sleep, diet, exercise, mood, or adherence with medication
regimens, to gauge progress, guide them in choices of health actions, and
analyze the results. ODLs differ from capturing clinical data
because they are personal expressions of what is important to the
individual.
