Current Trends in Consumer-Directed Health Plans
A study entitled, Consumer-Directed Health Plans: Current Trends,
Emerging Opportunities. This study was done by Paul Keckley, Ph.D., and
Howard Underwood, M.D., of the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions.
Researchers gathered and analyzed seven relevant studies published
between 2005 and June 2007 to assess the prevailing view about CDHPs.
Researchers noted the following:
-
Major consumer motivations to enroll in a CDHP
included: lower premiums, greater control over personal health care
decisions, and accumulated account balances.
-
Consumers want more information about cost of
services.
-
Those with a CDHP exhibited less satisfaction
with their health plan than those with traditional plans.
-
CDHP plans reported an 11% absolute reduction in
total spending during the first year.
