California Case Against the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs: Valentini et al., v. Shinseki, et al.

On June 8, 2011, California-based advocates for the homeless sued the federal Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to compel the department to repurpose an unused campus near Los Angeles to care for and house veterans with mental illness. The land for the campus had been donated more than 100 years ago to an agency that preceded the VA with the stipulation that it was to be used to care for veterans with disabilities. The plaintiffs allege that because the campus is currently unused and some of the buildings and land leased to commercial businesses, the VA has violated the intent of the donation.
