HIMSS Definition of Meaningful
Users of Certified EHR Technology
On April 27, 2009, HIMSS released
definitions of meaningful use of certified
electronic health records technology for
hospital and physician practices. HIMSS
submitted its definitions the Centers for
Medicare and Medicaid Services and the
Office of the National Coordinator for
Health Information Technology for
consideration as the government develops the
formal definitions.
Both definitions
recommend adopting the Certification
Commission for Healthcare Information
Technology as the certifying body for
electronic health records. HIMSS recommends
three phases of definitions, with a minimum
of two years for each phase. HIMSS also
recommends that meaningful use definitions
bridge existing gaps in interoperability of
health information, coordinate with HITSP
and IHE to create new harmonized standards
and implementation guides and reconcile
the gap between certified EHR
technologies, best of breed, and open
source technologies.
