 2004 Largest
Assisted Living Providers
The
acquisition of ARV Assisted Living by Atria highlights the 2004
ALFA/Assisted Living
Today Largest Providers List. There are now four giants
in the top 10- up from three last year. These four (Sunrise,
Alterra, Atria, and
Emeritus) control 71 percent of the capacity of the top
10 providers. However, demonstrating the fragmented nature of the
industry, Sunrise (as
the largest provider) controls only about 3 percent of
the total assisted living industry beds; although it would rise to
about 6 percent of
the beds in properties over 30 units (see footnote). The top 10
providers are up
7 percent in capacity in 2004, which is an improvement from a 3
percent loss in
capacity for 2003.
