 2003 Largest
Providers of Assisted Living Care
The
single-largest transaction in the history of assisted living
highlights the 2003 ALFA Largest Providers List. This years survey offers the first real
evidence of the long-predicted trend toward consolidation within the industry. Sunrise Senior Living
(name changed from Sunrise Assisted Living) acquired Marriott Senior Living Services, which
was last years fourth-largest provider, to leap to the No. 1 spot with capacity of 25,077.
Sunrise has replaced longtime leader Alterra Healthcare Corp., which still holds the No. 2 position
with capacity of 17,316. While Alterra has been selling properties (about 102 since 2000), it had
such a large base that it still dwarfs every other company except Emeritus, the third-largest provider.
