The Future Supply of Long-Term
Care Workers in Relation to the Aging Baby Boomer Generation
Report to Congress
Tommy G. Thompson, secretary of Health and Human Services, and Elaine
Chao, secretary of the Department of Labor (DOL), released a report revealing
that by 2050 the nation will need three times as many long-term care
workers. The workforce need is expected to triple in size due to the aging
Baby Boom generation. The report
was submitted to Congress on May 14, 2003.
About 5.7 million to 6.5 million long-term care workers, including
nurses, nurse aids, and home health and personal care workers, will be
needed to meet the nation's needs in 2050. This anticipated need is up from
about 1.9 million workers employed in 2000. The report emphasizes the
critical need to retain existing long-term care workers and attract new
workers.
