More Mentally Ill Persons Are in Jails and Prisons Than Hospitals: A Survey of the States
The National Sheriffs' Association and Treatment Advocacy Center found that Americans with sever mental illnesses
were three times more likely to be in jail or prison
than in a psychiatric hospital. States with lower mental health service spending
were more likely to incarcerate people with severe mental illnesses, and states that
spent more on mental health services were less likely to incarcerate these people.
