ShareNew York Department of Corrections & Office of Mental Health Private Settlement Agreement

The settlement agreement in Disability Advocates, Inc. v. New York State Office of Mental Health, et al., was signed by the New York Department of Corrections and the New York Office of Mental Health on April 27, 2007. Inmates with severe mental illnesses currently in solitary confinement for their safety and the safety of other inmates will be permitted to receive two to four hours of therapy outside the cell at least five days per week. Mental health services will be expanded for all inmates. New residential treatment programs will be created to provide care for inmates who cannot be housed in the general prison population. The new programs will add 215 new treatment beds for mental health services for inmate-patients and between 100 and 150 new beds for inmates with mental illness in disciplinary housing. The increased services will begin as soon as programs and treatment facilities are established.
