Preparing for Future Standards by Implementing an Electronic Health
Record System Now
For behavioral healthcare providers, the change to EHRs [electronic
health records] is as profound as the transition to new
reimbursement models in the 1970s and 1980s. Prior to that time,
community behavioral health centers relied largely on grant funding.
With the evolution of mental healthcare into a fee for
service/insurance/reimbursement system came the need for more nimble
and business-savvy leadership. The same thing is happening today as
we move from a paper-centric world to a computer-centric world, from
simple records to relational information. The [behavioral health]
industry may debate whether it was easier to understand the nuances
of new financing structures then, or the intricacies of HL7 and
interoperability today. Nevertheless, this change is occurring
inexorably, and organizations must evolve accordingly to remain
effective - in fact, to survive.
