SharePreparing for Future Standards by Implementing an Electronic Health Record System Now

For behavioral healthcare providers, the change to EHRs [electronic health records] is as profound as the transition to new reimbursement models in the 1970s and 1980s. Prior to that time, community behavioral health centers relied largely on grant funding. With the evolution of mental healthcare into a fee for service/insurance/reimbursement system came the need for more nimble and business-savvy leadership. The same thing is happening today as we move from a paper-centric world to a computer-centric world, from simple records to relational information. The [behavioral health] industry may debate whether it was easier to understand the nuances of new financing structures then, or the intricacies of HL7 and interoperability today. Nevertheless, this change is occurring inexorably, and organizations must evolve accordingly to remain effective - in fact, to survive.
