Nationwide Review of Medicare Payments for Interrupted Stays at Inpatient Psychiatric Facilities for Calendar Years 2006 and 2007
The federal Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) sought to
test the ability of the Medicare payment system for inpatient psychiatric facilities
(IPF) to avoid overpayments for interrupted stays.
The OIG discovered that Medicare fiscal intermediaries could not determine whether a
beneficiary was discharged from one IPF and
readmitted to another within three days.
