ShareA Blueprint for Systemic Change: Creating a Gender Responsive "Continuum of Services" for Girls At-Risk or Involved in the Juvenile Justice System

The Delaware Girls Initiative (DGI) conducted this study to identify the factors that lead to girls' involvement in the Delaware juvenile justice (DJJ) system and to determine how the system could better serve girls. The researchers present demographic information from the Department of Services for Children, Youth, and their Families (DSCYF) that indicated that girls are 40% of the DSCYF population served and that girls are only about 25% of the total Youth and Rehabilitative Service population.

The researchers present evidence that girls in the DJJ system have more mental health issues than boys and that many of these issues are gender-based. They concluded that the current system lacks gender-responsiveness and that the system should provide girls with gender-specific treatment.
