ShareOpiate-Related Drug Misuse Deaths in Six States: 2003

The Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) monitors drug misuse deaths. Six states: Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Utah, and Vermont participated in the DAWN drug misuse monitoring effort. According to reports from these states submitted by medical examiners, in 2003, in five of the six states, methadone-related opiate misuse deaths outnumbered those implicating oxycodone or hydrocodone, the exception was Vermont which reported a higher rate of deaths involving oxycodone. Nearly half (46%) of Maine's and more than one third of opiate-related misuse deaths in New Hampshire and Utah (37% and 34%, respectively) involved methadone. In comparison, methadone was implicated in only 17%of the opiate-related misuse deaths in New Mexico

The date implicates oxycodone in 30% of the opiate-related misuse deaths in Vermont, and in 14% in  Maryland and in only 13% in New Mexico.  The involvement of hydrocodone ranged from three percent in Maryland to 17% in Utah.
