Parity Implementation Coalition Comments on Interim Final Rules Under the Paul Wellstone & Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity & Addiction Equity Act of 2008

The Parity Implementation Coalition commented on the Interim Final Rules (IFR)for Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 recommending that the rules define chronic and acute care. The Parity Implementation Coalition recommended the IFR define these terms so that coverage determination-related non-quantitative treatment limitations could be applied equitably. The Parity Implementation Coalition states that a lack of standard definition for long-term care contributes to the inequity in benefits for chronic medical/surgical conditions and for chronic mental health or substance use disorder conditions. IFR states that health plans must offer equal policies for both chronic medical/surgical conditions and for chronic mental health or substance use disorder conditions.
