Dakota County Aging Initiative: Navigating the Age Wave
The Dakota County Aging Initiative (DCAI) presents a comprehensive
plan to create senior-friendly communities that feature accessible
transportation, mixed neighborhoods with subsidized, multi-level
senior units and market-rate apartments, shared green space, and
walkable communities. A key part of the DCAI is the involvement of
seniors as service designers.
A minority of elders committee will be created to assess services
and programs for cultural competency to ensure that all residents
are able to access services. This group will also help design
programs to meet unique needs within minority communities.
Another committee that includes representatives from the public and
private sectors will address emotional and mental wellbeing of
seniors and caregivers. This group will identify gaps in the current
system and develop plans to address them. An advocacy group will be
formed to inform legislators if any policy change threatens to make
Medicare or health care less accessible to seniors.
