Journey to Work: Creating Pathways for Young Disabled People in New Zealand
According to Statistics New Zealand (2006), the more qualified disabled people are more likely to get a job, young disabled people are almost twice as likely as
young non-disabled people to leave school without a qualification, disabled people with tertiary qualification are employed at about the same rate as non-
disabled New Zealanders with no qualification, and over 75% of disabled people do not require any extra equipment or other modifications to work. Because of
these statistics, Grant Cleland and Alexandra Smith published the report, Journey to Work: Creating Pathways for Young Disabled People in New Zealand. Their
report provides an overview of how young disabled people have been faring at school and in work. Also focuses on is the solutions needed to develop more
effective pathways to social, academic and economic achievement.
