Care of Adults With Mental Health & Substance Abuse Disorders in
U.S. Community Hospitals, 2004
The researchers reviewed 2004 data, the most current available, from
AHRQs Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project Nationwide Inpatient
Sample (HCUPNPS). The HCUPNPS is a database of hospital stays
nationwide at short-term, non-federal hospitals. The data reflect
90% of all discharges in the United States and the data includes
insured and uninsured patients.
In 2004, nearly a quarter, or 7.6 million in a total of 32 million
of community hospital admissions in the United States were related
to mental health or substance use-related disorders. Approximately,
1.9 million of the 7.6 million community hospital admissions were
directly related to a mental health or substance abuse disorder. The
remaining admissions were initially due to another condition, but
the patients were diagnosed as having a mental health or substance
abuse disorder.
