Los Angeles Mayor State of the City Speech
Mayor Villaraigosa discussed several topics. However on page 10 in
this transcription of his speech, he describes his plan to improve
the Los Angeles Unified School District.
The proposal will give the mayors of the cities in the Los Angeles
Unified School District a new oversight role in district affairs. A
council of mayors, whose members will be proportionally represented,
will oversee the hiring and firing of the superintendent and approve
the budget.
Mayor Villaraigosa proposed asking the state legislature make the
changes to the school district structure effective for six years,
and then conduct a progress report.
