ShareNevada Division of Child & Family Services White Paper: Transforming Children's Mental Health Treatment Services in Nevada

The Governors 2006-2007 Executive Budget for the Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) included funding to increase Nevadans access to mental health services. It provided funding for

  • Additional mental health staff to reduce waitlists for children in urgent need of treatment

  • Psychiatric nurses to join treatment services authorization teams (utilization management),

  • Increased rates for contracted residential treatment care providers.

However, changes in federal Medicaid law created a delay in implementation of targeted case management services for youth with serious emotional disturbances in foster care. As of December 2007, DCFS had a verbal agreement with the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for a six-month extension to bring the state plans into compliance with Medicaid changes caused by the 2005 Deficit Reduction Act.
