Maricopa County Mental Health Court Presentation
to GAINS National Conference 2006
This PowerPoint presentation shows the results of the Maricopa
County, Arizona, comprehensive mental health court program that has
reduced recidivism by people with a serious mental illness. ValueOptions provides the services that lead to a successful mental
health court. It intervenes in the justice system at four crucial
points to assess and guide the need for mental health
treatment:
- Law enforcement officers are
trained to identify and manage SMI behaviors
- Within 15 minutes after booking,
the ValueOptions team is notified about diversion candidates
over a secure data link system, so that a timely assessment can be
made and inappropriate sentencing be prevented
- Team members attend preliminary
hearings and coordinate with the courts to identify alternatives
- Post conviction, ValueOptions team
members collaborate with the Maricopa County Comprehensive Mental
Health Court to determine appropriate sentencing
- Upon parole, the ValueOptions
Correctional Officer/Offender Liaison program facilitates
successful reintegration of the person with SMI into the community
