Few executive teams consciously adopt an
organizational policy of isolationism, however, the demands of managing
daily operations can result in an internally focused management style
that fails to recognize external conditions until the financial
equivalent of the next ice age is at hand. Failure to recognize and
rapidly adapt to change can jeopardize the survival of an organization in
a number of ways. Failure to understand demographic and economic trends
can result in missed opportunities to expand into new markets and lines
of business. Failure to identify and adopt new technologies can result in
missed opportunities to reduce costs and improve services.
