General Equivalence Mappings: ICD-9-CM to and from ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS, published by The Department of Health and Human Services, provides the top 10 questions regarding the General Equivalence Mappings (GEM) and answers to those ten questions. The GEM were developed as a tool to assist with the conversion of International Classification of Diseases, 9th edition, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) codes to International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition (ICD-10) and the conversion of ICD-10 codes back to ICD-9-CM. GEMs are used in covering payment systems, payment and coverage edits, risk adjustment logic, quality measures, and a variety of research applications involving trend data. The intended audience for this report would include coding professionals, payers, providers, medical researchers, informatics professions as well as any others who use coded data.
