In 2006, treatment for children with mental health disorders cost the United States $8.9 billion. Approximately 4.6 million children received mental health treatment, with an average cost of $1,931 per child. This report also lists the next most expensive conditions, which include the following:

  • Asthma $8 billion to treat 12.9 million children

  • Trauma-related disorders (such as fractures, burns, and sprains) $6.1 billion to treat 6.7 million children

  • Acute bronchitis $3.1 billion to treat 12.8 million children

  • Infectious diseases $2.9 billion to treat 4.5 million children
