The Coverage Gap: A State-by-State Report on Access to Care
Nearly seven million Americans between the ages of 50 and 64 are
uninsured. The percentage of this age group without insurance has
increased from 13% to 15% between 1994 and 2004. Data from the
Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention's 2004 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS)
& data from the U.S.
Census Bureau Current Population Survey from 1994, 1995, 1999, 2000,
2004 and 2005 was analyzed to determine the number and the
characteristics of Americans who lack health insurance.
Key findings about the state of the uninsured are as follows:
-
41% of uninsured adults are unable to see a doctor to get medical
care when needed. However, disparities exist between the states and
the highest percentages of adults who have difficulty seeing a
doctor are West Virginia (57%), Oregon (56%), Kentucky (54%),
Washington (48%), and Maryland (47%)
-
57% of adults without insurance coverage do not have a personal
doctor or health care provider
