Ensuring
a Competent, Caring Healthcare Workforce for Louisiana
In
December of 2002, 22 nursing students received their diplomas from
a hospital-based program in Baton Rouge,
Louisiana. While the commencement speaker praised the graduates of
the Baton Rouge General Hospital
Program for their accomplishments, he had a message of greater
importance. He wanted the graduates
and the audience to know the very real impact these graduates
would have not in glowing general
terms of care and kindness but in the reality of numbers.
During the first year following their graduation,
these 22 graduates will care for over 5,000 patients. Before they
retire, they will care for more than
100,000 patients and their families, and provide more than one
million hours of care. These 22 individuals
will collectively impact society in a way that they cannot
imagine.
