A Report on the
Consumer and Consumer Supporter National Technical Assistance
Centers
In 1977 the
National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) initiated a unique but
modestly funded demonstration program, the Community Support
Program (CSP)) to stimulate and assist states and localities in
improving opportunities and services in the community for people
with a serious mental illness. Over the decades, CSP has fostered
the involvement of consumers and family members in the planning,
provision, policy development and evaluation of mental health
services. CSP leadership and financial support, combined with the
tireless efforts of newly empowered consumers, supportive family
members, supporters, and dedicated State and local providers and
administrators throughout the Nation have prompted wide
recognition of the role of self-help, mutual support, and
empowerment in the recovery of persons with a severe mental
illness.
