Virginia Office of Intellectual Disability Supports Quarterly Report for January-March 2009
The resource describes changes to the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services' (DBHDS) plan to close the Southeastern Virginia
Training Center (SEVTC). The closure plan was revised by the legislature. DBHDS now plans to reduce the bed-size of SEVTC to 75 and develop twelve
ICFs/MR and six waiver-funded homes in the community. Throughout this time, the Office of Intellectual Disability Supports (OIDS) worked with other DBHDS
offices, SEVTC staff, the community service boards of Region V, family members, private providers and stakeholders to establish a framework for the safe
and effective transition of individuals from SEVTC to new homes in the community. The OIDS is heading up a study of housing
needs for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities that is due to the General Assembly in October. Initial work began in March and a work group
that includes representatives from the advocacy communities, the housing authorities, and other interested parties has begun to meet to develop the plan for
the study.
