Performance Audit of the Client Eligibility Oversight, Error Identification, & Error Prevention Processes for Selected Public Assistance Programs of the
Michigan Department of Human Services
This review of the Michigan Department of Human Services found that in 2005-2006, assistance payment caseworks mistakenly approved benefits in 7.5% of cases. Additionally, workers were found to spend approximately one third of their time entering data and preparing applications for the initial benefit eligibility determination and subsequent reapplications. The auditors sought overall to assess the effectiveness of DHS's oversight of the client eligibility determination processes at DHS local offices for the Family
Independence Program, Food Assistance Program, Child Development and Care Program, and Medical Assistance Program. This report also made several recommendations to the DHS on how to improve.
