U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment for mental health and substance abuse treatment social workers will increase by 30% between 2006 and 2016; projected employment is expected to reach 159,000 positions. Rapid job growth is expected for social workers specializing in substance abuse treatment.

Overall employment for all social workers is projected to increase by 22% between 2006 and 2016, and to reach nearly 730,000 jobs. Employment of child, family, and school social workers is expected to grow by 19%, with rapid job growth expected for gerontology social workers.
