ShareNational Health Expenditure Projections 2007-2017

By 2017, spending on health care in the United States is expected to be about $4.3 trillion, which will be about 19.5% of the nations gross domestic product (GDP). In 2007, health care spending was $2.2 trillion, or 16.3% of GDP. Health-related spending is expected to grow at 6.7% per year from 2007 through 2017. However, economic growth is expected to slow to about 4.7% per year. Due to expected Medicare enrollment increases due to the baby boomer generation, public health care spending will increase, and private sector spending growth is expected to decrease from 6.6% percent in 2009 to 5.9% in 2017. The decrease in private spending growth is also related to the expected economic slowdown.
