"Steven's Law." Arizona Senate Bill 1263 to Mandate Insurance Coverage for
Autism Spectrum Disorder
This bill would prevent large group insurers from denying or refusing coverage
to children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The provisions
would only apply to an employer with more than 50 employees, including
the state employee health plan. Small employers (50 or less employees),
individual plans, self-insured employers, and state Medicaid plans are
exempted from the provisions of the bill.
Insurers would be required to provide children with ASD treatment up to
age 18. Coverage would include the following:
-
Diagnosis and treatment of ASD according to a
treatment plan
-
Services such as speech therapy, occupational
therapy, physical therapy, behavioral therapy, psychiatric care, and
psychological care
-
Copayments, dollar limits, and deductibles at
the same level as those for physical illnesses, with the exception that
maximum coverage for behavioral therapy would be limited to $50,000 per
year for as many visits as necessary, according to the child's treatment
plan
