March 4, 2009
Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services FY 2010
Budget Hearing Before the Commonwealth Joint Committee on Ways & Means
The Massachusetts Department of Mental Health (DMH) is planning to
transform the public behavioral health system to allow providers to
tailor services to meet consumer need. The transformation plans were
shared at a March 4, 2009, fiscal year 2010 Budget Hearing held by the
Commonwealth's Joint Committee on Ways and Means.
The transformation will focus on person-centered outcomes that
demonstrate an individual's improvement, and will support easy transition
between inpatient and community levels of care. DMH is planning an
inpatient redesign plan that will do the following:
Consolidate forensic evaluation services
Reduce inpatient bed capacity at a new DMH hospital scheduled for
completion in the spring of 2012
Transition inpatients ready for discharge to the community
