Sixth Annual Aetna HealthFund Study

The Aetna HealthFund study included 137 plan sponsors who offered an Aetna HealthFund HRA and/or an Aetna HealthFund HSA. The researchers reviewed seven years of HRA-specific data for 2002 through 2008, and five years of HSA-specific data. The study looked at two million members across the spectrum of Aetna medical products, including 436,000 Aetna HealthFund members. Overall medical costs for Aetna members with a Health Savings Account (HSA) were 10% lower than costs of members in a preferred provider organization (PPO) plan. The HSA members also had 15% fewer visits to primary care physicians for non routine visits.
