ShareEnsuring Your Tax-Exempt Status: An Executive Briefing- Handout

The challenges to ensuring the tax-exempt status of non-profit behavioral health organizations was the topic of a presentation given by John Talbot, Ph.D., executive vice president and senior associate of OPEN MINDS. The presentation was given March 13, 2009 at the Best Practices Management Institute produced by OPEN MINDS in Clearwater Beach, Florida. In order to maintain tax-exempt status, organizations should take the following actions:

  • Begin to prepare for the organizations tax-exempt status to be questioned by local, state, and federal officials; involve both the senior management team and the board of directors in this process

  • Develop a clear tracking of the use of charitable funds within the organization

  • Quantify the costs and the sources of receipts for each of the services the organization provides

  • Quantify the charitable contributions the organization receives

  • Map the application and distribution of charitable contributions to specific services and consumers

  • Develop explicit plans and criteria for the use of charitable funds

  • Review tracking of charitable funds with the board of directors on an annual basis
