Public Investment in Children's Early and Elementary Years (Birth to Age 11)

This report, published in March 2010 by members from Urban Institute and the Brookings Institution, titled Public Investment in Children's Early and Elementary Years (Birth to age 11), examines the public's investment on children from birth to around age 11. This report provides a first-time analysis of the nation's current spending on these children by outlining the 2008 federal expenditures from more than 100 federal programs. The report discusses, in detail, how much the public invests in children at different ages, federal spending vs. state and local spending for children, investments in each age group in the categories of health, nutrition, education and social services, income support, and housing, what portion of the federal resources targets lower-income children, are we funding what children need when they need it most, and the next set research investments that will be focused on.
