Texas
Medicaid's preferred drug list took effect on March 29, 2004. The
preferred drug list was created during the state's 2003
legislative session by a panel of physicians and pharmacists on
the basis of cost, efficacy and safety. The list is part of a bill
designed to counter rising prescription drug costs in the face of
a state budget crisis. The bill requires doctors who treat
Medicaid patients to prescribe medications from the preferred list
before trying other drugs
