ShareHealth and Human Services Commission Texas Medicaid Preferred Drug List and Prior Authorization Criteria

Texas Medicaid's preferred drug list took effect on March 29, 2004. The preferred drug list was created during the state's 2003 legislative session by a panel of physicians and pharmacists on the basis of cost, efficacy and safety. The list is part of a bill designed to counter rising prescription drug costs in the face of a state budget crisis. The bill requires doctors who treat Medicaid patients to prescribe medications from the preferred list before trying other drugs
