National Mental Health Anti Stigma Campaign (NASC) Fact Sheet
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services: Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration wrote this brief which outlines the National Mental
Health Anti Stigma Campaign background, target audience, and a brief summary of research findings. The study and research is used to explain how mental illnesses
are widespread and often misunderstood. According to SAMHSA in 2005 there were an estimated 24.6 million adults aged 18 or older who experienced serious
psychological distress (SPD), which is highly correlated with serious mental illness. Those with mental health conditions in this study have a high potential to minimize
future disability and pursue recovery if social acceptance is broadened and they receive the right support and services early on. Mental health recovery is a journey
of healing and transformation enabling a person with a mental health problem to live a meaningful life in a community of his or her choice while striving to achieve his
or her full potential.
