ShareLong-Term Care an Essential Element of Healthcare Reform

Researchers from Avalere Health, funded by the SCAN Foundation, sought to determine the extent of private financing and family contributions for long-term care. The researchers reviewed industry statistics and reports about payment for long-term care.

They found that in 2006, individuals and their families paid $64 billion out-of-pocket for long-term care provided by assisted living, nursing home, and home health care organizations. The 2006 out-of-pocket spending was 28% of the total $231 billion paid for long-term care in 2006. This estimate is 10% higher than other estimates because it includes costs for assisted living, dementia care, and board and care homes.
