ShareDepression & the Initiation of Cigarette, Alcohol, & Other Drug Use Among Young Adults

This National Survey on Drug Use and Health Report found that between 2005-2006, 9.4% of young adults aged 18 to 25 (3 million persons) experienced at least one major depressive episode (MDE) in the past year. The study also found that among adults in that age group who had not previously used alcohol, those who experienced a MDE in the past year were more likely to have initiated alcohol use in that year than those who had not experienced a MDE. Young adults who had experienced a MDE within the last year were also twice as likely to initiate illicit drug use than those young adults who had not had a MDE.
