SAMHSA News March/April 2009, Volume 17, Number 2

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has published its March/April 2009 newsletter, providing information on mental health courts, underage drinking, media literacy, suicide prevention, and inhalants. Highlighted in this edition, among its other programs, is SAMHSA's Jail Diversion and Trauma Recovery Program. The model described has five potential "intercept" points: law enforcement and emergency services, initial hearings and detention, disposition hearings, re-entry, and community supervision. SAMHSA believes that a treatment alternative is necessary for adults with mental illness, specifically prioritizing veterans. SAMHSA concludes that jail diversion programs will connect individuals to the necessary treatments and become a cost-savings program as studies of various state diversion programs show considerable savings compared to the cost of incarceration.
