ShareDHHS Memorandum About Extension of Transition Period for CAP-MR/DD Services & Supports Provided by Guardians Family Members Until October 31, 2008

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is changing the Community Alternatives Program for Persons with Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (CAP/MRDD). Most consumers who are eligible for the CAP/MRDD services have a transition plan that will ensure that their family caregivers provide only about 50 hours per week of reimbursable care. Any additional authorized care hours must be provided by another caregiver not living in the same house. DHHS seeks to reduce caregiver burnout as well as standardize the quality of services provided.

Sixteen individuals who live in areas without a pool of qualified community caregivers have been given an extension so that an appropriate care plan can be developed. These individuals will be transitioned to the program by October 31, 2008.
